What comes to mind when you think Abercrombie and Fitch? Maybe it’s memories of the shirtless male store greeters or the signature paper ‘abs bags’. Or the Abercrombie and Fitch UK stores with dimly lit interiors, the overwhelming aroma of body spray, or the rumour that you had to be conventionally attractive and definitely slim in order to operate the tills? It turns out however, that there is allegedly some truth in the latter rumour.

Set to rip the bandaid off the American dream brand is the forthcoming Netflix documentary, White Hot: The Rise & Fall of Abercrombie and Fitch. With a fixed April release date, the tell-all documentary is set to explore the global fashion brands’ alleged history of discrimination, offensive product lines, objectification, and potentially more. Netflix is yet to release full details but we can expect a wild ride into previously-unearthed territory.

A&F was founded in 1892 by David Abercrombie and Ezra Fitch as a hunting and fishing gear shopping destination. As times ticked, the brand has simply evolved into the powerhouse that it still remains today. The brand is now famed for its Abercrombie Curve Love Jeans, Abercrombie leather pants, and brands Hollister, Gilly Hicks, and Abercrombiekids.

Netflix has said “Abercrombie & Fitch conquered malls in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s with gorgeous models, pulsing dance beats, and a fierce scent. But while the brand was running white-hot, it’s popular ‘all-American’ image began burning out as controversy came to light surrounding its exclusionary marketing and discriminatory hiring.”

The documentary, directed by Alison Klayman (Jagged and Take Your Pills) will premier via Netflix on April 19.
