Review: Common, Manchester

Common is the friendliest, most comfortable Northern Quarter-based restaurant and late-night bar in the neighbourhood.  Whether you are in the vicinity to sink pints after a hard day in the office, want a quick natter with a cuppa, your pooch and your pals, or are just wanting to tuck into some hearty scran; Common has you completely covered.

My flatmate and I headed down to the Edge Street eatery a while ago to taste the veggie delights of an early morning brekky, talk third year and sip vanilla soy lattes.  How all good mornings are formed.

With a Scandinavian-style deco and bright natural light flooding through windows, the open-plan bar/restaurant is both laidback yet charming.  There is no official table service, which means picking your seat, your weapon of choice from their extensive menus and ordering at the bar.  ‘Tenders, food runners and general management are always friendly, super fast and carry no fuss and no frills.  Common is how it is and that is what makes it so good.

In the summertime (or just a Saturday evening) those who are a penchant for obscure IPA’s, hearty food and even better times constantly spill out of Commons’ doors and onto Edge Street.  There is a reason this place is so damn busy!  Life and soul of the party; Common is an always-packed, alternative night-out you just cannot go wrong with.

On a cold Tuesday morning in Common, I opted for a giant portion of Frijoles on Toast.  The insane brekkie consists of a dollop of smashed avocado, refried black beans, spring onions, chillies and heavily-buttered, creamy sourdough toast.  I also added an extra veggie sausage into the mix for good spirit. I hoovered up the entire plate like a madwoman.

My flatmate opted for the Veggie Fry, which again included that moreish avo, alongside veggie sausages, a hashbrown better than Maccies, fried egg, buttery button mushrooms and toast.  I am just drooling thinking about it.

I love Common.  It is cool, it is laid back and it does an excellent breakfast. If you are looking for a Sunday morning brunch spot to call your own, Common is your card to play.  Impress your friends and tuck in.

You can find Common on 39-41 Edge St, Manchester M4 1HW.  Opening hours vary.
