Two legendary guitarist, songwriters and Mancurian icons teaming up and collaborating on one, single track? Pinch yourself: this is not a dream. Ex-Oasis’ Noel Gallagher and Ex-Smiths’ Johnny Marr have joined forces to create Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds‘ latest mammoth single: ‘Ballad Of The Mighty I’.
A romantic vocal performance from Gallagher immediately strikes the ears attention as the ball begins rolling on ‘Ballad Of The Mighty I’. “Show me the rules of the game you play/ I’ll be waiting come what may” sings the brash, elongated vocal of Gallagher, complimented by a subdued tambourine before the wicked riffs, featured throughout the track in its entirety, make an appearance.
The five-minute track, full of charisma and typical Noel Gallagher charm, comes to a head during the instrumental section. A clear Johnny ‘Fucking’ Marr slant can be heard during the somewhat-sombre climax of ‘Ballad Of The Mighty I’, making this complex song increase intensity before the listeners very ears. Contextually, as Gallagher and Marr connect outside of music, it’s no doubt that the emotion steeping through this song is extremely strong, leading to Gallagher stating that this is “the best song [I’ve] ever written”.
